The holidays (or any events that involve gift wrapping) usually end with a big pile of wrapping paper, destined (hopefully) for the recycling bin, or worse, the trash. But even using recycled paper and then sending it off to be recycled again doesn't touch each of the three R's (for those of you that have been living in a dingy, littered cave since the early nineties those three R's would be Reduce, Reuse and Recycle). So unless you plan on reusing the same gift wrap for the next lifetime and then composting it in the yard when it finally falls apart, I have an alternative suggestion that covers all three R's. Put the gifts in reusable shopping bags. Now before you hit the back button and jump in your SUV, hear me out. These bags have come a long way since Al Gore made "green" the next "black". You can find them at almost all grocery stores and now even department stores. And they have been getting more attractive by adding designs and bright colors. I'd even say that they're trendy. My wife and I recently found some at ToysRus that blew us away. We grabbed them off the hooks faster than the kids could run for the Star Wars Legos. I'm telling you, they are very nice. They even have a shiny, glossy finish. And unlike some bags, they don't have a blaring company logo on the front (there is an R on the side of the bag, which isn't too noticeable, so I'm ok with that). We wrapped our gifts in a layer of newspaper and put them in the bags, along with a name tag. And that's it! No more storing wrapping paper that won't fit in the container that claims it can fit any size roll--lies, all lies. And our friends and family can feel good about their gifts. Who knows, maybe it's the little push they need to start them on the path of trendiness at the store.]]>
